Build a room temperature and humidity monitor

Use the HardwareBlocks Climate Kit to measure temperature and relative humidity with one SHT31 module. Prototype the dashboard using climate.sample events, then read the same fields from a claimed Wi-Fi device. Any alerts or historical storage are application features you implement.

Build it step by step.

  1. Start with two readings

Create a Climate simulation and send the example event. Display temperature_c in °C and humidity_pct in %.

  2. Test your thresholds

Choose thresholds for your own room and purpose. Try values on either side and add a delay or hysteresis so small changes do not repeatedly trigger an alert.

  3. Place the sensor carefully

For a physical prototype, compare readings with a reference instrument. Keep it away from direct sunlight, vents and the device’s own heat. Test it in the actual enclosure.

  4. Store or notify in your backend

The service retains up to 1,000 recent events per device and returns the latest 100 through the events endpoint. If you need longer history or email alerts, implement storage and delivery in your own application.

What the kit does not measure

The Climate Kit does not measure CO₂, particulate matter, air pressure, water leaks or food safety. Humidity readings alone do not establish a diagnosis of mould or indoor-air quality.

The event contract.

Example payload for simulation; it is not a physical measurement. Use the current sensor schema for validation.
