Can I build an AI hardware demo before buying a kit?
Yes. Create a workspace in the web app, add a simulated kit, send an example event and build a starter layout. You do not need a physical device for this software flow.
Is HardwareBlocks an alternative to Arduino or ESP32?
It is an alternative to assembling a sensor prototype from a development board, wiring, battery and enclosure. HardwareBlocks itself uses ESP32S3-based XIAO boards. Choose a bare board if you need full pin-level or firmware control; choose a kit if its fixed sensor and API match your project.
Can I use Claude, ChatGPT or Codex?
A coding assistant can read the public documentation and help produce code or a supported JSON layout. Private MCP tools require a client that supports HTTP bearer headers. OAuth is not implemented; compatibility depends on the client. You can always paste a supported JSON layout into the web app.
Does AI run on the device?
The current HardwareBlocks product does not include a deployed AI model. Use your own backend and model provider for inference. The device supplies sensor data; the web app renders supported widgets.
Do the kits use Bluetooth or Wi-Fi?
The current integration uses Wi-Fi and HTTPS. The underlying ESP32S3 hardware supports Bluetooth, but HardwareBlocks Bluetooth commissioning and native mobile apps are not released.
What does one kit cost?
99 EUR including VAT, plus 30 EUR EU shipping and handling per order. Two kits total 228 EUR and three total 327 EUR. Up to 10 devices can be mixed in one online order. Payment is requested when the order is ready for dispatch.
What comes in the box?
One sensor module, the XIAO controller, an installed 400 mAh rechargeable battery, an enclosure and a USB-C cable. A mains adapter and power bank are not included. Product images show enclosure concepts; physical fit and firmware must be tested before dispatch.
How long does the battery last?
There is no fixed runtime claim. The sensor, capture or sampling rate, Wi-Fi activity and sleep behaviour determine runtime. Test your application. Use USB-C power for longer sessions and check power-bank low-current compatibility.
Can the standard app run my generated JavaScript?
No. The fixed renderer accepts metric, status, JSON and camera widgets. Host custom application logic, notification delivery and AI inference in your own application.
Are camera images public?
No. Only the latest image is stored, and access requires the owning workspace token. A camera event has image_url set to null; it is not a public image link.
Is this ready for a safety-critical or outdoor deployment?
The kits are intended for prototyping. No waterproofing, safety certification or production reliability is claimed here. Validate the actual hardware, enclosure, connectivity and application for its intended use.
